[DARWIN, Charles] HERSCHEL, Sir John F. W. (edit.).
A Manual of Scientific Enquiry; Prepared for the Use of Her Majesty's Navy: and Adapted for Travellers in General.

Published by Authority of The Lords Commissions of the Admiralty.

Description:
pp. (ii) blank, (ii) Half-title, xi, (i) blank, 488. Double-page map PLATE A inserted at p.97, large folding map inserted at p. 106 PLUS pp.96a/96b AND unnumbered leaf at p.98, 16 text woodcuts. Original blue cloth with gilt anchor device on the front cover, almost entirely unopened, joints repaired and rebacked with the old spine relaid, binder's ticket of REMNANT & EDMONDS on rear paste-down, glazed yellow advertisement end-papers, occasional foxing, the odd small marginal tear at the prelims., margins a bit dusty in places, ink inscription on front blank - 'Sid[ney Sussex ?] Coll. Taylor Library'; this book is EX LIBRIS RICHARD FREEMAN, bibliographer of Charles Darwin, with his initials, purchase date (10 May 85) and notes on the front paste-down.

*FREEMAN #325 - Darwin's contribution is SECTION VI, GEOLOGY, pp. 156-195. Freeman states that the text has been transposed at p.178 line 2, p. 180 line 2, and p. 190 line 4. Most copies thus have a cancel of 20 pp., pp. 171-190, and the cancellans may be found in a pocket of the rear board. The transposition on pages 178 and 180 is here present; page 190 is unopened thus I am not able to check - this transposition was corrected in the second issue by cancelled sheets and the cancellands discarded. There is no indication that a pocket for the cancellans was present in this copy. Freeman does state - 'Copies may have been issued without the cancellans, and without the pocket in bottom board; such a copy, in leather, is in LUC.' The copy offered is therefore an extremely rare issue with the transposed text but no cancellans and no pocket in the rear board. Richard Freeman bought this copy in 1985, long after he had sold his major Darwin collection of c.2500 items to Toronto University in 1967.
