JOHNSON, Samuel.
Johnson's Proposals for Printing Bibliotheca Harleiana 1742. FACSIMILE EDITION.

Proposals For Printing, by Subscription, The First Two Volumes of Bibliotheca Harleiana : Or, A Catalogue of the Library of the Late Earl of Oxford, Purchased by Thomas Osborne, Bookseller, in Gray's-Inn. November, 1, 1742.

pp. (xii) : Title - Introduction, signed R[obert]. W[illiam]. C[hapman]. - facsimile of 2 leaves - blank with decorative tail-piece verso - imprint of the OUP. Marbled wrappers with paper label on the front cover and a little faded, the top corners dog-eared with that of the front wrap torn without loss, the spine splitting at the ends but all intact, a reasonable copy.

*LIMITED EDITION of 350 copies - INTRODUCTION : '...... the original folio Proposals seem to have been overlooked; there is no copy in the British Museum [there is today, plus copies in Chetham's Manchester and Trinity College Cambridge], and the copy in the Bodleian has lain perdu, being folded, and so catalogued as octavo. The present reprint is from an immaculate copy of the original recently deterré by Mr. E. Joseph of 48a Charing Cross Road. The reproduction is by the collotype process; and water-marked paper has been used; but to preclude (it is hoped) any possibility of confusion with the original, the words Facsimile 1926 [in ink, in manuscript, and with ('26) also inserted above the word 'added' in this sentence] have been added to the title-page.'
