FOX, Adam.
The College of SS. Mary and Nicolas Lancing. A Note.

Drawings by W. H. FOX F. S. A.

pp. 31, (i). 10 plates. Original paper wrappers tied with a silk cord, now perished, covers a bit marked and foxed, else a very good copy.

*With a presentation inscription to PETER BURRA from E. B. GORDON, Lancing, 1930. PLUS an autograph letter (2 sides, signed 'Peter') and an incomplete letter in the same hand, both from 'Field's House, Lancing College', undated. Both letters talk of musical events at the College, and both make mention of (Peter) Pears - 'Pears is trying for a Christ Church Organ Scholarship in March. It is frightfully hard but of course it will be gorgeous if he gets it.' - Yesterday the orchestral society met for the first time. It was screamingly funny - like a zoo let loose. It was hardly bearable at first. Pears was the centre of amusement on the basoon (sic).' PETER PEARS (1910-1986) was at Lanciing College from 1923 until 1928. He was close friends with twins, Peter and Nell Burra, and retained this friendship beyond Lancing. In 1936, Burra was given a long-term loan of a cottage on Bucklebury Common, Berkshire, and Pears began to stay with him regularly. Benjamin Britten was also a good friend of Burra and Pears and Britten first met each other whilst staying at the Berkshire cottage. Burra was killed in an air crash in 1937. COPAC records two locations - the British Library and the Society of Antiquaries.
