To celebrate the conferring of the Honourable Freedom of the City of Newcastle-upon-Tyne upon SIR ANDREW NOBLE, Bt., K.C.B.

Banquet by The Lord Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Alderman Sir William Haswell Stephenson, D.L., D.C.L.). in the King's Hall, Armstrong College, on Friday, 23rd September, 1910.

Colour-printed stiff card folder with photograph of a naval vessel and other shipping on the River Tyne, containing pp.4 - PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPH OF NOBLE - MENU - TOASTS - PROGRAMME OF MUSIC. The centre fold has a panoramic photograph of Tyne shipping, mostly naval. Tied with green silk ribbon, a little foxing at the front and the lower corner very lightly knocked, else in very good condition.

*TOGETHER WITH a gilt-edge invitation card, city arms in silver at the top, with the name of MR. A. G. RIDOUT. SIR ANDREW NOBLE [13 September 1831 22 October 1915] Scottish physicist noted for his work on ballistics and gunnery. He was born at Greenock and educated at Edinburgh Academy and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, then commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1849, promoted captain in 1855 and became secretary of the Royal Artillery Institution. He was secretary of the British government select committee on the replacement of smooth-bore cannon with rifled artillery and carried out research on the subject. In 1859 he became Assistant-Inspector of Artillery and in 1860 a member of the Ordnance Select Committee and of the Committee on Explosives, remaining on the committee until it was dissolved in 1880. He was appointed joint manager at the Armstrong armaments works in Elswick, Newcastle, in 1861, rapidly becoming a partner in 1861. His research into ballistics continued and he worked with Sir Frederick Abel on improving the properties of black powder, making it burn more slowly to produce more gas and a more consistent pressure, with the result that he was able to increase muzzle velocities from 1600 to 2100 feet per second, while the energy developed increased by about 75%. With Sir William Armstrong's effective retirement from active control in about 1890, Noble's primary role changed from scientist to businessman, formally becoming chairman in 1900, and he oversaw much of this growth of the company. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1870, gaining the Gold Medal in 1880. In 1893, he was knighted and in 1902, was created a baronet.
