MUNTHE, Axel.
Red Cross and Iron Cross.

Description:
pp. 156, (iv) Advertisements. Publisher's blue cloth, boards with single-rule gilt borders, uncut, Murray's Prospectus for Munthe's other titles loosely inserted, a very good copy.

*This title, first published anonymously, by 'a doctor in France, in 1916, records Munthe's time in the ambulance corps in France in the First World War. It was written, he said, 'sur pied de guerre......... in pain and anger.... But anger is a dangerous anaesthetic, it makes a man see red, it can even make him delirious and turn him into a raving lunatic or a monster.... anger cannot last, it is too costly, no man an afford to be angry for long. Nor can a nation.' Munthe donated all the profits from this book to the French Red Cross.

John Murray. London.
