TOZER, William, R.M.
The Cruise of H.M.S. 'Serapis', with H.R.H. The Prince of Wales. 1875.

pp. 38. Pasted to the inside of the rear free end-paper is a watercolour sketch of the ship 'Serapis'. Contemporary calf, title lettered in gilt on the front, author's name stamp on the front free end-paper - W. Tozer, 12, Home Sweet Home, Plymouth', a few ms. corrections in the text in the author's hand, two leaves loose, one with a small marginal tear and loss though not affecting text, the other lacking two corners not affecting text, a much used copy on cheap paper and poor printing.

*No copy on COPAC or WORLDCAT. This appears to be the author's copy, and the only one so far recorded, perhaps the only one to be printed and a classic of doggerel verse - 'Now ere I close my log/Once again we will sing/Long Live Albert Edward/Our future noble King', though providing much information on events and activities during the trip. HMS Serapis was the third Royal Navy ship to bear that name; a Euphrates-class troopship, she was commissioned for the transport of troops to and from India and was launched in the Thames on 26 September 1866 from the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company at Leamouth, London. In September 1875, she took the Prince of Wales to India to celebrate Queen Victoria's appointment as Empress of India. It returned on May 11th. 1876 and was paid off on May 24th. An extensive contemporary photograph album of the trip is in the collections of the Royal Museums, Greenwich, and although one of the group photographs shows and identifies many of the ship's crew, our author, William Tozer, is not amongst them. The initials following his name on the front cover imply that he was a Royal Marine, and presumably was not of sufficient rank to be photographed.
