*The three prizes were £400, £200 and £100, considerable sums in 1874. Depending upon the criteria chosen, the value of those figures in today's terms would vary between c.£31,000 and c.£246, 000 for the first prize of £400. Essayists were canvassed throughout England and Wales, hence the translation of Peek's Proposal into Welsh.
