MONRO, Alexander [primus].
COPY of an AUTOGRAPH LETTER to DOCTOR ANDREW PLUMMER, Professor Medicine, University of Edinburgh, 13th. July, 1741. A note on the verso of the bifolium states' Original given Dr. John Thomson 2 Oct. 1826.', and initialled W.E. ?, on paper watermarked for 1824.

It reads : ' Dr. Plummer You forgot to send me the Papers you promised, those I remember are, the Imperfect Sketch of the Epidemicks; the List of Papers for the Essays; Dr. Pringle's Paper on the vitrum antomonii ceratum; Porterfield on the Hydrophobia; Plummer on do; Stevenson on the Blood: Plummer on Salts: Can you account for the formation of the Balls formed round extraneous substances in the Intestines, if you can please yourself let me have the case and explication which you gave a Lecture upon. I would wish to have such as these Papers as are ready as soon as possible, and the others in a very little time. You are certainly much to blame in contributing so little to this collection as you have done, and indeed in not undertaking some of the volumes. I shall not insist on either the Duty or Honour of the thing, tho these should have their wight too, but surely the consideration of Interest should prevail. What must the world think when they see the public Professors have such a small share in such a Performance............................ I know you'l [sic] excuse the freedom which I can take much better with my Pen than with my tongue, as it can only be the effect of friendship in Your Most Obedt. Servt. Alex. Monro.'.

Written on 3 sides of a folio sheet folded to quarto, in very good condition.

*ALEXANDER MONRO [1697-1767] - clearly very peeved at not getting the support needed for his collection of Essays - Essays and observations : physical and literary. Read before a society in Edinburgh, and published by them. Volume I. / [By Philosophical Society of Edinburgh.] Edinburgh : printed by G. Hamilton and J. Balfour, 1754. This collection appears not to have progressed beyond the first volume, itself rather scarce - COPAC give one location only, at the Bodleian, Oxford. This is not listed in ESTC.
