*BABINGTON [1808-1895], succeeded Henslow as Professor of Botany at Cambridge in 1863, he had met Darwin as early as 1836 - 'Mr. Charles Darwin, just returned from South America, where he has laboured for zoologists as well as for hammer-bearers'. Journal, p.59, Oct.17, 1836. The book also gives the text of two letters to Darwin, in 1862 and 1864, each of them discussing the seeds of Lythrum hissopifolium, and in each commiserating on Darwin's problematic health.
