All in contemporary patterned paper boards, leather spine labels, uncut and occasionally unopened, some foxing in all volumes, three labels chipped and worn, some wear to the spine ends and occasionally at the edges of the spines, complete with engraved portraits as called for, all with the book-plate of MATTHEW ARNOLD and occasionally the bookseller's ticket of Williams and Norgate, offered as an important association collection of 13 volumes, in 12.

*MATTHEW ARNOLD [1822-1888] - as a literary critic Arnold held Goethe in the highest esteem, not only as a creative writer, but as one of Europe's most important thinkers. In his poem 'March 22 Death of Goethe', he mourned the passing of 'Europe's sage' : WHEN Goethe's death was told, we said: Sunk, then, is Europe's sagest head. Physician of the iron age, Goethe has done his pilgrimage.
