[BOLINGBROKE, Henry St. John, Viscount.]
Letters on the Spirit of Patriotism: On the Idea of a Patriot King: and on the State of Parties, At the Accession of King George the First.

pp. xxxvi, 243, (i). With half-title and engraved portrait. Contemporary calf, insect chewing of the rear board has removed patches of the leather, with minor attacks on the front board and at the head of spine affecting the top margin of the end-papers though not any further into the text, the portrait coming loose at the top, occasional pencil marginalia, a good copy overall.

*This, New, edition, edited by Thomas Davies, also contains the biographical sketches by the Earl of Chesterfield and Lord Orrery, plus Pope's Address to Lord Bolingbroke which concluded his Essay on Man. The addition of Pope's Address seems to be an ironic gesture by Davies, as Pope had been accused by Bolingbroke of a gross betrayal of trust in having a pirated edition printed. In the Advertisement to the book, both in the original edition of 1749 and in subsequent re-issues, as here, Bolingbroke made such a vehement attack on Pope that considerable controversy ensued.

For T. Davies, in Russel-Street. London.
