*The earlier expedition report deals with the preliminary trip to Campbell Island in the subantarctic in 1873. It was sponsored by the French Government with the aim of observing the transit of Venus in the succeeding year and although not very successful in its primary intention, other scientific results were usefully obtained. This report is complete in itself - the results of the longer expedition in 1874 were published from 1877 to 1890 in 9 volumes. Most of this volume is taken up with numerous contributions dealing with the photographic preparations for recording the transit. In the thirty-odd years since Fox Talbot's first announcement, the use of photography in astronomy had so advanced that it was an indispensable aid to scientific observation, and preparations were being made all over the world for the photographic recording of the 1874 Transit of Venus. The second volume [Tome III, pt.1] is part of the 9-volume scientific report 1876-1890 - it covers the history of the mission, astronomical results, the geography of Campbell Island, hydrography, atmospheric pressures, photographic apparatus, terrestrial magnetism, meteorology, tides.
