Anecdotes, &c. Antient and Modern. With Observations.

Description:
pp. xvi, 470, xvi; 106, v Index, (i) Errata, (xvi) Stockdale's Catalogue. Engraved frontispiece of an adept with a pair of bellows at the furnace, distilling the literary contents of a vast alembic, the products spilling into an urn marked 'Anecdotes'. Contemporary sheep, a bit scuffed and worn along most of the edges, internally nice, signature of JAMES GASKING [FRCP, 1756-1817], a good copy.

*A gallimaufry of stories and moralisings including one, 'Sketches', by 'a lady not unknown in the literary world, whose name, did she permit the Editor to publish it, would confer honour on his whole performance.' Who was she? Arranged in alphabetical order, they run from ADVICE & ALCHEMY to WONDER & WOMEN, through FANATICISM and HARSH SOUNDS to LAZY MONKS and MEDICINE. First published in 1789, this edition contains an extensive Appendix with separate pagination and sub-title but continuous register. Stockdale's Catalogue is not without interest - mostly new books but with a couple of pages of highly desirable second-hand stock, including Latham's General Synopsis of Birds, at £9.3s.6d.
