*This manual was designed to aid Army surgeons in evaluating optical fitness for soldiers and recruits, for the efficient use of firearms. Longmore had been a surgeon in the Indian Army and had earlier given an excellent description of heat-stroke [Garrison-Morton #2248, 1859].
