pp. xl, 362, (ii) Advertisement. 11 fine colour-printed plates and 1 plain plate by WILLIAM DICKES, numerous text woodcuts. Erratum slip to Part III. Original gilt decorated cloth, rear board blotched, lacking front free end-paper and half-title and attached frontispiece loose, all plate guards foxed offsetting to the opposing text leaves.

*FREEMAN & WERTHEIMER #108 - first issued in 12 monthly parts, 1858 to 1860, this is the first, and only, book form edition. Four thousand copies were printed but it did not sell well; by the end of 1869, 2700 copies remained in stock. The fine coloured plates were printed from Gosse's own watercolours by one of the best colour-printers of the day.
