Original green cloth gilt, faded and a bit blotchy, the spine slightly worn at the ends and splitting at the head to one side, small tear at the top gutter of the title without loss, scattered marginal foxing. First edition. 12mo. pp. (iv), 48, 24 Catalogue. 12 handcoloured engraved plates. Original gilt decorated cloth, blotched on both boards, scattered foxing, heavier at the front. A scarce set, seen better times but in reasonable condition.
*The decoration to the bindings is identical though the cover borders in the 'Glaucus' are in black, whilst those of the 'Companion' are in blind; the spines are identically gilt. See FREEMAN & WERTHEIMER Gosse Bibliography, pp. 6-7, for a note on 'Glaucus'. The first edition was published in a run of 750 copies - subsequent editions, a fifth was issued in 1873, totalled another 6000 copies, for all of which Kingsley received £275.
