CONTAINED IN: Journal de l'École Polytechnique, Tome III.

pp. (iv), 477, (ii) Errata, (i) blank. Contemporary cloth-backed marbled boards, the paper lacking from the front board, uncut and largely unopened, a very nice copy.

* A stated above, this volume contains the first three parts of the work - a note to the verso of the half-title reads: 'LA IVe. et la Ve. partie de cet ouvrage paraitront dans quelques mois, avec un Tableau synoptique de toutes les parties de la mecanique.' These final two parts do not appear to have been published. COPAC records four copies, identical to this, in the UK. See also SOTHERAN BCM I, #3844 'scarce' - 'The author was one of the first to apply to practical purposes the discoveries and progress in theoretical mechanics made during the second half of the XVIII. Century, and was the inventor of a frictional dynamometer known by his name [the Prony brake].' PRONY (1755-1839) was, from 1800, France's leading engineer and engineering educator. A graduate of the École des Ponts et Chaussées, he became the Director in 1798 and was a highly placed civil servant in successive governments. He wrote on hydraulics, and mechanics in particular and in this work intended to systematise mechanics, as Fourcroy had systematised chemistry in his Philosophie chimique [see Preface].
