Original oat-meal paper boards, leather spine label, uncut, the spine worn with a section at the head splitting off and some loss at the foot, the board edges wearing especially the lower edge, the lower corner of the first few leaves show faint damp marking [with the loss of a tiny piece of the fore-margin of the first text leaf], the final three leaves show some old damp-marking in the top inner corner, despite which, a good and unsophisticated copy with wide margins.
*BAUMGARTNER & FULTON Bibliography of the Poem Syphilis, #46 - the copy here offered is more complete than that described in the bibliography, having the Errata leaf. This is paginated '137' and is clearly a half gathering, the stub of which is still present between pages 128 and 129. It otherwise conforms to the collation. The title has no imprint - this is found at the foot of page 136. This is the second Italian translation, severely criticized at the time, and defended by degli Antoni in 1740. The Italian text is on the recto and the Latin on the verso of the leaves. It is of some interest in having a glossary of medical terms and another of geographical names. The printer, Tommaso Colli, frequently issued his books under the imprint 'San Tommaso d'Acquino', established himself in 1724 and became a distinguished member of the trade, his firm continuing till 1848.
