SOEMMERRING, Samuel Thomas von.
Über einige wichtige Pflichten gegen die Augen.

pp. 56. Fine modern calf, blind-decorated in the antique style, some foxing and top edge damp-staining [now faded], an old ownership stamp repeated twice on the title and in the occasional margin, a good copy.

*SOEMMERING was a noted anatomist and a very skilful illustrator. Some of his best work was done on the human sense organs, and especially the eyes. In 1791 he made important observations on the macula lutea. This little work on the care of the eyes was originally put out by G. C. LICHTENBERG, an examination of the publications of GEORGE ADAMS [see our current catalogue] and BUSCH plus his own observations, with additional comments by Soemmerring. The second edition of 1795 is listed in COPAC, held by the British Library. Also recorded is a fourth edition, with a different Frankfurt imprint, of 1803 [Edinburgh and Newcastle], by this time under Soemmerring's authorship.
