TOGETHER WITH: Secreete Byvoegzels, of Nodige Sleutel Voor de Twaalf Brieven van den Berugten Astrologist Ludeman; ter Opheldering Zyner Kunstgeheimen. No publisher, no date [?Den Haag, 1769]. TOGETHER WITH: Nieuws Tyding uit de Andere Waereld, of Samenspraak Tusschen den Beroemden Schilder, en Schryver JACOB CAMPO WYERMAN; en den Beruchten Doctoren Astrologist LUDEMAN; etc. Bakhuysen. s'Hage, a.o. 1768. pp. (iv), 430; (ii), 142 [168]; 48. Fine engraved frontispiece. Early Continental sheepskin, rubbed at all edges and worn at the spine ends, front joint weak but intact, last few leaves with faded dampmarking and last two leaves grubby on verso, frontispiece cropped to the border and laid down, withal a good copy.

*Purporting to comprise a series of extended letters from Ludeman to Kersteman, the BLC ascribes the entire work to the latter. KERSTEMAN [1728-1793] also produced an eulogistic account of the life and work of Ludeman, issued in the year of the latter's death in 1757 [see WELLCOME III p.556 and WALLER II #17291 ]. LUDEMAN [1683-1757] was an astrologer and physician, practising in Amsterdam - the fine engraved frontispiece to this work presumably shows Ludeman in his study, receiving a line of patients, both women and men. One man counts his change, the others carry urine flasks, one of which is being handed to Ludeman who sits at his table on which is opened a folio reference, a globe and a panel against which to view the flasks, one standing nearby. Uroscopy or water-casting was a favorite subject for many of the Dutch painters of the seventeenth century and is a feature of nearly all the Dutch pictures of the doctor's visit [see GARRISON History of Medicine, pp. 300-301].
