HAMEL, Mr. Gustav [1889-1914].


*An original coloured lithograph from 'Vanity Fair' by WH [name unknown]. Hamel learned to fly at the Bleriot school in Pau aged 21. In 1911 he flew from Hendon to Windsor in 18 minutes and delivered a sack of letters and postcards, the first air-mail flight. In 1913, he and BENFIELD HUCKS [see entry on our web-site for this person] raced a seventy-five mile circuit around the Midlands which he won by 20 seconds. On May 23rd. 1914, he was returning from Paris in a new monoplane but never reached home. A body was later found off Boulogne, and identified as being Hamel.
