*An original coloured lithograph from 'Vanity Fair'. His early career was in the Indian Civil Service, he became Inspector-General of Police in Bengal , corresponded with Francis Galton on the use of fingerprinting, developed a recognition formula with colleagues Haque and Bose, later Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, introduced the use of dogs into the police force, and championed the use of fingerprinting in forensic work.
