*This set comprises the first edition of 'Groans' and the first edition of the 'Last Groans', this latter being issued as v.II of the second edition of the whole. An earlier owner, or perhaps bookseller, has taken the trouble to ink over the words - VOL.II - on the half-title and title of the second volume and, in addition, has very carefully scored through the second numeral of Vol.II of each register letter. The first volume comprises 12 Dialogues; the second continues with Dialogues 13 to 21. The two volumes together are most uncommon. They comprise a gentle satire on the vexations and nuisances of the everyday - in watering places - fashionable life - the country, games and sports - reading and writing - London - public places, and so on.
