pp. x, 174. Wood engraved portrait frontispiece by BUTTERWORTH & HEATH after a photograph by JAMES BROWN, INVERCARGILL [NEW ZEALAND], folding lithographed map, title vignette 'Raid Upon the Seals'. Later half calf and marbled boards, the spine heavily rubbed at the top with a small hole, boards rubbed, Dedication leaf with the top corner torn off and repaired without loss of text, a small piece torn from the lower margin of the first text leaf with the loss of a few letters from a foot-note, one later leaf torn without loss, both repaired, scattered and slight marginal marks, a very reasonable copy offered in good working condition because of the repairs.

*The first, and only, English edition, preceded by the 1865 edition, published in Melbourne.
