JEAN-BAPTISTE BIOT ( 1774-1862), graduated from the École Polytehnique in 1791, taught astronomy and physics at the Faculté des Sciences, Paris, from 1808 to 1849; he worked until 1832 in the fields of astronomy and electricity, and from that time onwards mainly in optics, especially on the problems of polarised light.
